The Eric Morris System

The Eric Morris System is based on what is known as "The Method.”

This system of acting is half "Instrumental" and half "Craft."  The Instrumental work is the process through which an actor learns to identify what his/her obstacles to creativity are and, through the utilization of exercises, to eliminate them. Hundreds of these exercises have been developed to break down the protective walls that stand between the actor and self-expression. Through diligent application of these techniques, the actor learns to eliminate these blocks, eventually achieving a state that Morris has coined "Being." In this state, an actor is fully prepared to work organically and creatively because he/she is expressing no more or less than what is being experienced at that moment.

At this point, the actor is ready to focus on the second half of the Eric Morris System, which is the Craft. Craft work is comprised of three stages: Obligation, Choice, and Choice Approach. These components function simultaneously within the actor to create realities when working on stage or in film. The Obligation is the actor's responsibility to the script. The Choice is the person, place, or object the actor picks to stimulate an experience in the hopes of inspiring the desired experience. The way an actor makes the choice real for him or herself is the Choice Approach.

Approximately half of Mr. Morris's system is predicated in Sense Memory. A clear understanding of Sense Memory is in No Acting Please...
